Uisce Éireann and Murphy International Limited have passed the halfway mark on the €15 million upgrade of the Fethard Wastewater Treatment Plant in County Tipperary.

The project is a key part of Uisce Éireann’s national investment programme to modernise wastewater infrastructure, ensuring systems are efficient, compliant and capable of supporting future development.

The Fethard works involve a complete upgrade of the treatment process to improve the quality of treated wastewater being discharged into the Clashawley River and to meet national and EU wastewater standards. Once complete, the plant will provide greater capacity to serve both existing and future homes and businesses in the area.

Murphy International Limited is delivering the project on behalf of Uisce Éireann, with completion expected in 2026. Construction to date has included the delivery of new inlet works, treatment and dosing tanks, a power substation, site buildings, and new underground pipework and pumping systems.

Commenting on progress, Angus Hall, Programme Manager with Uisce Éireann, said: “We've made great strides in the delivery of this significant plant upgrade that will deliver improved wastewater treatment for homes and businesses in Fethard and the surrounding areas, while also ensuring compliance with national and European wastewater regulations. This project reflects Uisce Éireann's continued commitment to the efficient delivery of critical infrastructure to support communities in Tipperary while safeguarding the local environment.”

Environmental enhancement forms an important part of the works. The site includes new tree planting—such as alder, birch, wild cherry, willow, and rowan—alongside native hedgerows and wildflower grasses to achieve a net biodiversity gain. The project also incorporates upgraded, energy-efficient equipment to reduce the operational footprint of the plant.

The Fethard upgrade forms part of Uisce Éireann’s wider investment across County Tipperary, with recent projects completed in Newport, Ballina, and Cahir; planning approved for a major upgrade in Nenagh; network investigations underway in Thurles; and planning under review for Grangemockler and Kilsheelan.
