Uisce Éireann has completed a major upgrade to the Kilgarvan Water Treatment Plant in County Kerry, securing a safe and reliable water supply for 749 customers in Kilgarvan and the surrounding area.
The €600,000 investment has resulted in the removal of the local supply from the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) list of vulnerable water supplies.
The project, carried out by Uisce Éireann's delivery partners, focused on key improvements to the plant's treatment process, including the installation of granular activated carbon (GAC) filters, borehole works and associated infrastructure upgrades. These works have strengthened the resilience of the local supply and improved the overall quality of drinking water in line with regulatory standards.
John Hickey, Programme Manager at Uisce Éireann, said: "We are proud of the team effort that led to the successful completion of the works, allowing for the removal of the supply from the EPA's Remedial Action List (RAL). We would like to thank the local community for their support and patience while the work was underway. With this project now complete, we can ensure the continued delivery of safe, clean drinking water to the wider community across Kilgarvan."
Edward Haythornthwaite, Regional Drinking Water Compliance Manager at Uisce Éireann, added: "We are fully committed to identifying and addressing risks to drinking water quality. Our key focus remains the protection of public health through the provision of safe, clean, and secure water supplies for local communities. This critical upgrade ensures ongoing compliance with drinking water regulations and significantly reduces the risk of future water quality issues."
