EnergyCloud Northern Ireland and Radius Housing have partnered to deliver zero-carbon hot water to social housing properties across the region, starting with new installations in Lisburn.
The initiative uses EnergyCloud's smart technology to redirect surplus renewable electricity, such as wind power that would otherwise go unused, to heat hot water cylinders in participating homes.
The system allows tenants to access hot water at no cost, reducing energy bills while supporting sustainable energy use. The first households went live on the EnergyCloud platform at the end of August, with residents receiving free hot water on 13 nights during September alone.
The project addresses fuel poverty and energy waste simultaneously, providing practical support for families while making better use of Northern Ireland's renewable electricity capacity.
Jamie Delargy, Chairperson of EnergyCloud Northern Ireland, described the initiative as a "practical, scalable solution that delivers real help to real people," emphasising the collaboration with partners including Budget Energy, Click Energy, Share Energy and SSE Airtricity.
John McLean, CEO of Radius Housing, highlighted the organisation's commitment to sustainable communities and reducing tenants' energy costs, noting the potential for expansion of the programme in Lisburn, Belfast, and beyond.
Radius Housing manages over 14,000 homes across Northern Ireland, providing a mix of general needs, supported, and older persons' housing. The organisation has a long history of energy efficiency improvements, and the partnership with EnergyCloud extends this work by connecting tenants directly to the region’s renewable energy resources.
