Ward and Burke Construction Ltd have commenced essential water main replacement works in Mount Farran, Cork City, on behalf of Uisce Éireann.
The project involves replacing nearly 2.2 kilometres of ageing cast iron water mains with new, durable modern pipes. The upgrade will enhance water quality, strengthen supply reliability and reduce leakage across the northside of the city.
Brian McCarthy, Programme Manager at Uisce Éireann, said: "In many parts of Cork City, the pipes date back to the 1940s and Uisce Éireann has prioritised Mount Farran due to the deteriorating condition of the old cast iron mains in the area. Aged water mains and old service connections contribute to quality issues and water leakage. These works are part of our ongoing programme to modernise the water network."
The project forms part of Uisce Éireann's continued investment in upgrading Cork City's water infrastructure, with similar mains replacement works currently taking place in Gurranabraher, Knockpogue Avenue and Knockfree Avenue.
Brian O'Leary, Regional Operations Manager, added: "We are delighted to progress these upgrades for the Mount Farran community - these long-term improvements to the water network are a critical step in addressing water quality issues and strengthening local supply. The replacement works are an important part of addressing intermittent reports of discolouration across the city and reflect Uisce Éireann's ongoing commitment to replace legacy pipework for the communities most affected."
Construction teams will be active from early next week in Mount Farran, Farran Cleary Place, Assumption Road, Rathmore Road, Goldsmith Avenue, Old Youghal Road, Richmond Hill and Audley Place. To facilitate the works safely, traffic management measures, including stop/go systems and localised road closures, will be implemented as required. Any road closures will be communicated locally in advance, and emergency and local access will be maintained throughout.
Mr McCarthy added: "We would like to thank customers in advance for their cooperation and patience while we complete these essential works."
The project also includes the installation of new water service connections from the public water main to property boundaries, with any lead connections on the public side being replaced. Customers will receive at least 48 hours’ notice ahead of any planned short-term water interruptions.
