Alliance Castle Councillor Sam Nelson has welcomed the completion of Belfast City Council's acquisition of the Assembly Rooms, describing it as a vital step towards preserving the city's heritage and protecting historic buildings from further decline.
Following a meeting of the Strategic Policy and Resources Committee the Council confirmed that it has finalised the purchase of the Assembly Rooms, a landmark building dating back to 1769. The acquisition marks the building’s transition from private ownership to Council stewardship, paving the way for future restoration and reuse.
Cllr Nelson said: "I am very pleased that the acquisition of the Assembly rooms has finally been completed today. This marks the exciting first steps towards rescuing an important part of our city’s heritage.
"Alliance has long campaigned for the restoration of this historic building, which was regrettably left to deteriorate for far too long. Dating back to the 1700s, this building represents the legacy of Belfast’s past, and it's great news that we have been able to prevent it from being left to ruin.
"The challenge now is to restore the building and bring it into public use in a way that respects its treasured history and heritage. I hope this significant project marks the start of ongoing efforts to revitalise and regenerate our city centre for everyone who lives, works, and visits here."
