The major construction phase of the Ennis Public Realm Works project is nearing its conclusion after almost two years of development. Clare County Council has confirmed that the works will reach a significant milestone by the end of November, in time for the build-up to the Christmas festivities.
From Wednesday, 26 November, vehicles will once again be able to access all routes through the town centre, with the exception of O'Connell Street.
O'Connell Street will remain closed to vehicular traffic until 16 February, providing an extended period for the public to experience the street without vehicular traffic and construction activity.
During this time, Clare County Council will invite the public, businesses, and visitors to share their views on future access, traffic flow, and possible long-term pedestrianisation options for O'Connell Street.
Jason Murphy, Clare County Council Director of Service with responsibility for Ennis MD, thanked the community for their patience, calling the completion a "positive moment for the town." He highlighted that the experience of the street during the festive period will allow the community to provide informed feedback on the potential and challenges associated with the possible pedestrianisation of the street.
The public consultation will include:
• Online Survey: Running from Monday, 8 December 2025, to Sunday, 4 January 2026, via the Clare County Council website.
• Formal Submissions: A formal Section 38 process will begin in mid-January, inviting further public submissions on the road alterations.
Mayor of Ennis Cllr Mary Howard encouraged everyone to participate, noting that feedback "will play a vital role in shaping the future of O'Connell Street."
While the primary construction is completed, some standard snagging and minor finishing works will take place in the New Year.
