Uisce Éireann has announced significant progress on its critical upgrade works designed to strengthen and safeguard the water supply for Clonmel, Co. Tipperary.
The multi-million-euro investment project focuses on two main construction elements: the upgrade of the Monroe Water Treatment Plant (WTP) and the installation of extensive new water mains.
Contractors have now laid over 12km of the planned 15km of new pipeline, a major step toward delivering a safer, more reliable, and resilient supply to homes and businesses in Clonmel and the surrounding areas.
Essential pipelaying has been completed this week on Cross Street, while works continue on Cashel Road and the section running from Rathronan Cross to Giantsgrave Reservoir. To facilitate essential water main connections, works will take place overnight on College Avenue on Tuesday, 4 November 2025, from 7.00pm to 7.00am on Wednesday, 5 November 2025.
In addition to the extensive pipework, the construction at the Monroe WTP involves a full upgrade of the existing treatment facilities. This upgrade is being carried out to provide the necessary capacity to allow for the future rationalisation of the Poulavangoue Water Treatment Plant. Construction enhancements will also be made to the Rathronan Pump Station, which will be connected to the Monroe supply, linking to the Clonmel North Reservoir and providing additional resilience to the Poulavanogue network.
Darragh Hannon, Programme Manager at Uisce Éireann, thanked the community for their patience: "These upgrades are vital steps towards ensuring that Clonmel’s water infrastructure is fit for the future—strengthening supply and providing the reliability that the town needs. We’d like to thank the community for their patience as we continue to carry out these essential works."
Separately, Uisce Éireann also confirmed that works on its National Leakage Reduction Programme are progressing on Kickham Street and Gladstone Street, before moving to Catherine Street in mid-November, which will require a phased road closure for safe and efficient delivery. The utility is also progressing with the delivery of a €10 million upgrade to the Glenary Water Treatment Plant.
