The long-planned Luas Finglas extension project, a major construction initiative to expand Dublin's public transport network, has received formal planning approval from An Coimisiún Pleanála. This decision is a significant milestone that enables the project to progress immediately towards the procurement and commencement of construction.
The transformative infrastructure project will extend the existing Luas Green Line by four kilometres northward from Broombridge to Charlestown. The construction works will involve adding four new stops along the route: Charlestown, St Margaret's Road, Finglas Village, and St Helena's.
The project is included in the National Development Plan and represents a commitment by the Government to developing sustainable urban transport solutions. In addition to the light rail infrastructure, the scheme involves the construction of additional cycle and pedestrian facilities, offering sustainable and active transport options along the new route.
Minister for Transport, Darragh O'Brien, welcomed the planning approval: "This is a major milestone in expanding Dublin's public transport network. Luas Finglas will offer thousands of Dubliners a fast, reliable, sustainable way to get around the city, helping to reduce traffic congestion and improve air quality. The additional cycle and pedestrian facilities involved in the project will offer even more sustainable and active transport options.
"By reducing journey times, the project will also support the development of housing and businesses along the route. Luas Finglas will bring great benefits to the local community as well as to Dublin as a whole."
