The major redevelopment of the Galway City 110 kV substation project has reached completion with the final transfers from the old Air Insulated Switchgear (AIS) station to the newly constructed Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) station.
This marks the culmination of the final construction steps aimed at reinforcing the electricity grid across the Galway region.
The complex final phase of work involved transferring circuits from the Knockranny, Salthill, and Cashla substations. The successful upgrade has significantly strengthened the local energy supply and delivered essential infrastructure capacity.
Crucially for Ireland's climate action targets, the completed project has facilitated the connection of an additional 65 MW of wind energy. Furthermore, it has created access to a total of 229 MW of energy on the transmission system for future generation projects in the area. This capacity is significant in enabling wind farms across west Galway to export their energy to the rest of the county.
The successful completion was achieved through the collaboration of colleagues at ESB Networks and ESB Engineering and Major Projects.
