The Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr. Fergal Dennehy, has visited Mahon to view the recently completed Mahon Street Renewal Scheme.
The €15 million project, funded by the National Transport Authority, aims to deliver safer, more connected streets across Mahon, linking schools, shops, sports facilities, and leisure amenities through improved pedestrian, cycling and transport infrastructure.
Stretching over 5.6 kilometres, the scheme encompasses Ringmahon Road, Skehard Road, Avenue de Rennes, Ballinure Avenue/The Maples, and Castle Road. It also introduces a new 'quiet-way' from Castle Park to Ashwood via Loughmahon Park, as well as enhanced connections to the Blackrock–Passage Greenway through Sean Cronin Park and to the Lower Harbour Greenway.
Key features of the renewal include new footpaths and carriageways, upgraded bus and cycling infrastructure — including bus shelters, public lighting and traffic signals — and extensive landscaping works to create greener, more welcoming public spaces.
The project also delivers:
• Two new pedestrian crossings and upgrades to existing ones
• Three new signalised junctions at Ringmahon Road/Skehard Road, Ringmahon Road/Avenue de Rennes, and Skehard Road/Avenue de Rennes, designed to provide safer crossings for all road users
• Enhanced public areas with seating, trees, shrubs, and biodiversity-friendly planting
• Over 200 semi-mature street trees specially selected for the area
• Integrated traffic calming measures and improved road markings to reduce vehicle speeds
Approximately 5.3 kilometres of safer cycling infrastructure, including segregated cycle tracks and greenways.
Lord Mayor Dennehy said: "The Mahon Street Renewal Scheme represents a major step forward in making our communities safer, greener, and better connected. It's a fantastic example of how investment in public infrastructure can improve quality of life for residents while promoting active and sustainable travel across our city."
