A £100 million UK Government investment in Belfast Harbour's D1 Terminal to support two new offshore wind farms in the Irish Sea has been welcomed by Alliance Party Energy Spokesperson David Honeyford MLA.
The funding, announced by the Prime Minister, will support infrastructure needed for the major renewable energy developments, which are expected to generate up to three gigawatts of power – enough to supply around three million homes – while creating hundreds of jobs.
Mr Honeyford, MLA for Lagan Valley, said the investment marked a major milestone for Northern Ireland’s renewable energy ambitions.
He said: "This is to be warmly welcomed as one of the largest renewable energy commitments ever made in Northern Ireland. Together, these projects should deliver up to three gigawatts of clean power, supplying 3 million households and creating hundreds of jobs.
"Northern Ireland now has a huge opportunity to be a true leader in renewable energy, delivering high-skilled local jobs and long-term energy security. This shows what is possible when we work together to deliver real benefits for local households and communities.
"Energy security, affordability and climate responsibility go hand in hand. We can see here that, in recognising this, we can deliver landmark projects, boost the economy and cut costs for consumers right here in Northern Ireland."
