Construction of a new extension at Sligo University Hospital is underway, increasing bed capacity and supporting growth in key clinical services.
As part of the works, the hospital has introduced a temporary change to the main entrance.
Building began last month and will provide an interim increase in capacity ahead of the longer-term delivery of the Multi-Service Block.
The scheme comprises two 21-bed wards of single en-suite rooms with supporting ancillary accommodation, adding 42 inpatient beds in total. This will improve patient privacy, comfort and infection control, while easing immediate pressures on SUH capacity.
The project also includes a shell-and-core area to facilitate a future Cardiology CT unit and an expanded Day Oncology Services area, allowing phased service improvements without major later construction.
Grainne McCann, Hospital Manager of SUH said: "This expansion reflects our commitment to meeting the growing healthcare needs of our community, while also planning for future demand. By delivering additional bed capacity and expanding our services, we are ensuring better outcomes for patients."
From Monday 24th November, the main public entrance will be temporarily relocated for approximately 16 weeks to enable construction, close to the current entrance along The Mall. Supports for patients and visitors include clear on-site signage and directions in appointment letters to help plan journeys. The temporary main entrance is about 65 metres towards the roundabout for the main car park and Emergency Department.
The development forms a key element of the hospital's wider strategic infrastructure plan to enhance service delivery, relieve pressure on emergency services and improve access to specialised care.
