Uisce Éireann will begin works next week to reinforce the water network serving parts of Limerick City, replacing ageing backyard water mains and tackling high levels of leakage under its National Leakage Reduction Programme.
Over 1.1km of old cast-iron mains will be replaced along O'Donoghue Avenue, Clansfort Terrace, Glenmore Avenue and Mulgrave Street. In many older estates, water connections to the rear of homes—often iron or lead—are shared between properties, making leaks harder to find and fix and sometimes leading to low pressure when bursts occur. Replacing these will improve reliability and water quality for customers.
Commenting on the project, Programme Manager for Uisce Éireann's National Leakage Reduction, Brian McCarthy, said: "We're investing in the future of Limerick City with essential network upgrades that will strengthen and sustain our water infrastructure for generations. These improvements will safeguard homes and businesses, ensuring a reliable supply of clean water for years to come.
"Ageing water mains contribute to a significant amount of leakage and by replacing them with more modern pipes, we’re reducing bursts, eliminating leaks, improving water quality, and futureproofing drinking water. We appreciate the patience and support of the local community as we work together to build a stronger, more resilient network."
To minimise disruption, works will be undertaken in short sections. Traffic management will be in place using traffic lights and flagmen on O’Donoghue Avenue, Clansfort Terrace and Mulgrave Street. A road closure will apply on Glenmore Avenue from 05 January – 30 January 2026, with local and emergency access maintained and diversions signposted.
The programme will start on O’Donoghue Avenue, move to Glenmore Avenue in the new year, and finish on Mulgrave Street.
Some short-term water supply interruptions may be required; customers will receive at least 48 hours' notice ahead of any planned outages.
Ward and Burke Construction Ltd will carry out the works on behalf of Uisce Éireann, with completion expected in April 2026.
