Precast circular tanks have played a central role in upgrading the Newport Wastewater Treatment Plant (WwTP) in County Tipperary, with Shay Murtagh Precast supporting Ward & Burke on behalf of Uisce Éireann to deliver the scheme.
The €7 million project modernises existing facilities to meet current requirements and future growth, lifting overall operational capacity to a population equivalent of 3,600. Shay Murtagh Precast was responsible for the design, manufacture and installation of three bespoke precast circular units, supplied as part of the company’s concrete storage tank range.
The package comprised a Storm Tank with a 15.25m internal diameter and 3.5m panel height, an Aeration Tank of the same diameter with a 6m panel height, and a Final Settlement Tank measuring 11.86m in diameter with a 5m panel height. Each was engineered to suit its stage of the treatment process, demanding tight tolerances and coordinated delivery.
A key challenge was the constrained site, where two of the large tanks had to be built within cofferdams. Off-site manufacturing ensured components met exact specifications, enabling rapid and safe assembly in limited working areas. This approach reduced risks associated with sealing and testing and underpinned the long-term structural performance required.
The enhancements are intended to protect the local environment by improving water quality in the nearby Mulkear River, while ensuring compliance with national and EU wastewater regulations. The project supports local development and underscores the value of precast concrete solutions in delivering complex infrastructure with lasting benefits for the community.
