Uisce Éireann is set to begin a major upgrade of wastewater services in Hospital, Co Limerick, as part of its national programme of targeted investment to support housing delivery and the local economy.
The €21.5 million scheme will provide a new wastewater treatment plant and substantial network enhancements to future-proof the town's growth.
The project will significantly increase the capacity of existing facilities, improve water quality in the River Mahore and ensure the community can expand with confidence. The modern treatment plant and associated infrastructure are designed to cater for more than twice the current population, enabling planned residential and commercial development and strengthening essential services.
Welcoming the start of the works, James Browne T.D., Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, said: "The commencement of this project is very welcome news for the community in Hospital, Limerick. Investment in wastewater infrastructure that provides additional capacity will bring tangible benefits by supporting the existing population and the delivery of new homes and local growth in the area."
He added: "Continued investment in public water services is essential to facilitating housing delivery. That is why in the recent Budget and through the National Development Plan we have increased Uisce Éireann's funding to accelerate the delivery of water infrastructure and support the development of new homes across the country."
The scope of works includes upsizing incoming sewers, removing existing stormwater overflows and constructing a new stormwater storage system. A new outfall will discharge treated effluent to the River Mahore, while sustainable sludge drying reed beds will cut energy consumption and reduce transport movements. Ground-mounted solar panels will also be installed to generate on-site renewable power.
Darran O'Leary, Programme Manager at Uisce Éireann, said: "This investment is a vital step for the Hospital community. By increasing treatment capacity and introducing sustainable solutions, we're protecting the local environment and supporting the area's future growth and development. The new plant will deliver long-term benefits for residents and businesses, ensuring Hospital is well placed to thrive for years to come."
Glanua Ireland Ltd. will deliver the project on behalf of Uisce Éireann, with completion expected in 2028. Construction activity will be focused around the existing treatment plant, located behind the Herbertstown GAA grounds, with access via Millfarm Road. Residents may notice an increase in construction traffic while works are under way.
