NI Water Progressing Works To Safeguard Derry City's Water Supplies

NI Water says a £2.5 million programme to protect Derry City's drinking water for the next 25 years is advancing as planned, strengthening the network's resilience and enhancing security of supply for homes and businesses.

Anna Delargy, NI Water project manager, said: "The first phase of improvements involves applying an innovative protective wrapping to the Strand Road Trunk Main – the large watermain that crosses the Craigavon Bridge on the city side, as the main is showing early signs of deterioration.

"Preparation work is progressing well and with scaffolding complete, both lanes of the bridge are now fully open to traffic. Work can now continue with minimal disruption.

"This major scheme is an important investment in the future security of the city's drinking water network. Improvements to the main will reduce the risk of bursts and interruptions, helping to keep water flowing, when demand is high or during adverse weather conditions.

"We are grateful for the public's patience and cooperation, and as work continues into the new year, further phases of work will be publicised."

She concluded: "Finally, I would like to extend my thanks to the NI Water project team including colleagues from NI Water's Customer & Operations Directorate, contractor Farrans and McAdam for helping to ensure the project continues to progress smoothly with minimal disruption to our customers."
