Farrans Construction was proud to play a supporting role in the recent Engineers Ireland STEPS Young Engineer Award. The company's teams visited five schools across five different counties, successfully engaging with over 220 primary school pupils.
The Engineers Ireland STEPS Young Engineer of the Year award is a competition designed for primary school students in 3rd and 4th class. Students are tasked with developing a creative engineering project aimed at improving or helping their local community. The children identify a problem and work collaboratively in teams to devise an engineering solution, with a strong emphasis placed on sustainability.
Farrans' Stakeholder and Social Value team partnered with company engineers to deliver a 'role model' presentation on careers within the industry before proceeding to judge the innovative student projects.
By participating in this programme, pupils gained direct experience of the excitement, challenges, and creativity involved in designing and building a real-world project. Farrans hopes the experience will inspire many of them to consider a future career in construction and engineering.
The schools visited were located close to Farrans' active Uisce Éireann and NI Water projects, and included:
• St Clare's Cavan (where six classes participated with over 30 projects).
• Scoil Iosa, Ballyhaunis, Mayo.
• Ballyhmana, Galway.
• Doohamlet National School, Monaghan.
• St Teresa's Primary School in Lurgan.
