Uisce Éireann has reported strong progress on its water mains replacement programme in Galway City, with 2025 marking a productive year for infrastructure upgrades across the west of the city.
With construction activity set to pause in the coming days, crews are preparing to conclude the latest phase of works before the end of the year.
The most recent project, located at Maunsells Road and St Mary's Park, is expected to be completed within weeks. As part of this programme, more than 1.5 kilometres of new water mains have been installed along Maunsells Road, Taylor’s Hill and throughout St Mary's Park. Full road reinstatement is scheduled to take place early in the new year.
According to Uisce Éireann, the upgrades will deliver a more secure and reliable water supply for local residents and businesses, while significantly reducing the risk of future operational issues on the network.
The utility acknowledged that the works have caused disruption in the area, particularly due to traffic management measures required to ensure the safety of crews and the public. Uisce Éireann thanked customers for their patience and understanding as the final tasks are completed.
In parallel, Phase 1 of the St Mary's Road project has seen more than 1.3 kilometres of water mains replaced in Galway's West End during 2025. This phase included works at Raleigh Row and Palmyra Park, aimed at improving water quality and reducing leakage across the network.
Enda Mac Namara of Uisce Éireann said the programme is progressing well. "We are progressing on schedule with these significant works to the west of Galway city and are delivering on our commitment to provide for our customers," said Enda. "We want to thank the residents and businesses who have been impacted by these works for their patience and cooperation to date."
Looking ahead, the next phase of works in the West End is planned for early in the new year. This phase will involve approximately 240 metres of mains replacement on William Street West and Dominic Street Upper, and is scheduled to take place during January and February.
The works are being carried out by Farrans Construction on behalf of Uisce Éireann.
