Green Light For 934 Homes At Dundrum Central

The Land Development Agency (LDA) and Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council have welcomed An Coimisiún Pleanála's approval for a 934-home development with community amenities at Dundrum Central, on the site of the former Central Mental Hospital.

Working in partnership, the LDA and the council said the scheme will deliver 753 affordable for-sale and cost-rental homes, alongside 181 social homes, substantially increasing housing supply in the Dundrum area.

The project includes a mix of apartments, duplexes and houses designed to meet a range of needs, from single people and families to older residents, first-time buyers and renters. Planned facilities feature a community centre with a multipurpose sports facility, a medical centre, retail units, a café, a crèche and a new public plaza.

A separate permission granted by An Bord Pleanála in May 2023 for 852 affordable homes has not progressed due to a legal challenge, which the LDA is defending.

In response to feedback from the initial consultation, the approved scheme reduces apartment building heights to between two and eight storeys. The development is intended to be sustainably integrated with the surrounding south Dublin neighbourhood.

John Coleman, CEO of the Land Development Agency said: "The LDA welcomes the decision from An Coimisún Pleanála to approve this planning application at Dundrum Central. This is an important milestone for a long-awaited project, which is vital to delivering much needed affordable housing in an area with a significant unmet need.

"Having engaged with the community since project inception, we understand how necessary this project is. We are eager to progress the project and deliver on our commitments to current and future residents through our partnership with Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council."
