Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins has confirmed the start of a £200,000 street lighting replacement contract on Newry's Abbey Way.

The civil engineering works will span the section between Margaret Street and the Kilmorey Street junction. The scope of the project involves the decommissioning of existing equipment and the installation of 30 new street lighting columns, alongside a full replacement of the underground cabling network. The scheme will conclude with the installation of high-efficiency LED luminaires.

Commenting on the commencement of the works, Minister Kimmins said: "This is a substantial investment for the Newry area which will deliver significant benefits for residents and road users. The investment demonstrates my commitment to investing in and improving our road network, which is vital for connecting our businesses and communities. I would like to thank residents, local businesses and commuters for their patience while this essential infrastructure work is carried out."

The Department has implemented a specific traffic management plan to maintain site safety while minimising public inconvenience. All operations requiring lane closures are restricted to off-peak windows from 09:30 to 16:00 on weekdays.

The project team has set a target completion date of Friday 30 January 2026, though this remains subject to suitable weather conditions on-site.
