NIE Networks has commenced a major infrastructure project in the Duncrue Road and Duncrue Street areas of Belfast to significantly increase electrical capacity.
The essential works, which are required to facilitate a local redevelopment project, get underway today, Monday 12th January 2026, and are expected to last for approximately three months.
The project involves the installation of new underground cabling. Once completed, these upgrades will not only provide the additional capacity required for the area's growth but will also improve the overall reliability of the local electricity grid. Morrow Contracts has been appointed as the sub-contractor to carry out the works on behalf of NIE Networks.
Operational Impact and Traffic Management
To ensure the safety of the workforce and the public, several traffic management measures will be implemented throughout the duration of the project:
• Lane Closures: Partial lane closures will be in effect, supported by operational traffic management including temporary traffic lights at key junctions.
• Parking Restrictions: On-street parking will be restricted in the immediate vicinity of the works. These measures are necessary to facilitate a contraflow system, which has been designed specifically to avoid full road closures.
• Work Schedule: In an effort to expedite the project and reduce the duration of disruption, crews will work extended hours, including weekends where necessary.
NIE Networks has confirmed that there will be no interruptions to electricity supplies as a result of these technical upgrades.
While every effort is being made to maintain business access, some short-term diversions may be required. These will be clearly signposted, and local businesses are encouraged to inform their suppliers and customers of any temporary access arrangements.
A spokesperson for NIE Networks stated: "We understand the inconvenience that our works can bring, and we appreciate the cooperation of all our stakeholders involved. NIE Networks and our contractors are committed to keeping disruption to a minimum. We would like to thank you in advance for your patience and support during this period of works."
