Mayo County Council will start on-site works on Monday, 2 February 2026, to deliver 31 own-door access apartments at the former Duffy's Bakery site in Ballina.
Finna Construction has been appointed as the main contractor. The build is expected to take 18 months, with completion slated for autumn 2027.
The urban infill scheme is intended to revitalise the long-vacant bakery location, which sits within walking distance of Ballina town centre.
The project comprises 31 own-door-access homes: three three-bedroom units, 14 two-bedroom units and 14 one-bedroom units.
Chief Executive of Mayo County Council, Kevin Kelly, welcomed confirmation of the start date during #housingfocus week, saying: "This new development showcases Mayo County Council’s commitment to deliver housing for all different sectors of community.
"With a mix of three-bedroom, two-bedroom and one-bedroom homes, we are creating a community for both families and individuals to thrive and have long term housing security.
"Along with providing homes, this development has been carefully thought out and planned by our architects and housing section, to increase a sense of neighbourhood and connection on Kevin Barry Street and James Connolly Street."
The layout has been designed to encourage connectivity, passive surveillance, a sense of security and opportunities for social interaction, helping to foster a close-knit, vibrant community.
A private courtyard will further strengthen residents’ sense of place and belonging.
The project will also sensitively refurbish three derelict townhouses on Raheen Row, using a respectful contemporary approach to achieve a coherent, contextually appropriate renewal of the existing terrace.
