ESB Networks has completed a major infrastructure upgrade in Portlaoise, uprating two transformers from 31.5 MVA to 63 MVA.
The project doubles local capacity, enabling new homes, farms and businesses to connect to the grid while significantly strengthening supply reliability across the Midlands.
Finished in just 24 weeks, the upgrade ensures the network is better prepared to meet growing electricity demand and to integrate more renewable generation as Ireland advances towards a low‑carbon future.
The programme was delivered by ESB Networks alongside ESB Engineering and Major Projects (E&MP), working with EirGrid and delivery partners Omexom, Kilcawley Construction and TLI Group.
Alan Rossiter, Strategy and Network Development Manager, ESB Networks, said: "This upgrade forms part of ESB Networks' broader strategy to future-proof Ireland's electricity infrastructure. By enhancing the capacity of key substations like Portlaoise, we are ensuring that the electricity network can continue to deliver safe, secure, and sustainable electricity to homes, farms, businesses, and communities across the country."
ESB Networks said it remains focused on building a smarter, more resilient grid that can support a decarbonised society and the needs of customers nationwide.
