Waterford City and County Council has announced that construction in the Newtown area of Waterford City will get under way on Monday 15 June 2026. The works relate to the St. John of God National School, Passage Road, Active Travel Safe Routes to School (SRTS) scheme and the Newtown Area One-Way Systems (Phases 1 and 2).
The one-way arrangements that have been operating on a trial basis will be made permanent through the installation of fixed infrastructure. Phase 1 applies to Wilkin Street and Passage Road, while Phase 2 covers St. Alphonsus Road, along with sections of Newtown Lower and Water Street.
Activity will take place on or adjacent to Passage Road, John's Hill, Wilkin's Street, St. Alphonsus Road, Newtown Lower and Water Street.
Appointed contractors will put traffic management in place for the duration of the works. All arrangements will fully comply with current health and safety standards (Chapter 8 of the Traffic Signs Manual).
As works are on or beside public roads, some disruption can be expected for residents and road users, though every effort will be made to minimise inconvenience. Traffic management updates will be provided via Waterford Council's MapAlerter service at www.mapalerter.ie/waterford.
