Work To Start On Portrane Road Upgrade

Construction News Image

Fingal County Council is set to commence key works on the Portrane Road Enhancement Project, a major scheme to improve pedestrian safety, accessibility and the overall standard of the road network in the Donabate area. The project has been designed with a strong emphasis on safer routes for schoolchildren and families travelling to and from St. Patrick's Boys National School and Scoil Phádraic Cailíní.

Upgrades will include widening footpaths along the northern side of Portrane Road and installing new pedestrian crossings to make movement safer and easier. Traffic-calming features such as junction tightening and a raised table will be introduced to lower vehicle speeds and create better conditions for people walking and cycling. A new bus lay-by will also allow services to pull clear of the main carriageway, improving traffic flow.

The council says the scheme supports its wider active travel programme by enabling safer school journeys, encouraging walking and cycling, and enhancing the local environment for residents and visitors alike.

Welcoming the project, Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Tony Murphy, said: "This is an important investment in the local area that will significantly improve safety and accessibility for the community. In particular, it will support safer journeys for schoolchildren and their families, while encouraging walking and cycling and creating a more pedestrian-friendly environment for everyone who uses this route."

Donnelly Civil Engineering Ltd has been appointed as the contractor. Works are scheduled to start in July and are expected to run for approximately nine months. The council said it will seek to minimise disruption during construction, with access to homes and businesses maintained wherever possible.

Director of Infrastructure and Transport at Fingal County Council, Matthew McAleese, stated: "The Portrane Road Enhancement Project reflects the Council's strategic focus on delivering safer, more inclusive transport networks. By strengthening pedestrian infrastructure and introducing targeted traffic calming, the scheme will support a shift towards active travel while improving connectivity for all road users."

Fortnightly updates on progress, including traffic management details, will be provided on the project webpage (Portrane Road Enhancement Project | Fingal County Council) and via the council's social media channels.
