Louth County Council will commence the next phase of improvement works at the Railway Lands in Ardee in the coming weeks.
The upgrades, delivered as part of the Ardee 2040 Regeneration Vision, include enhancing and improving almost 1.1km of pathway through the site, linking O'Carroll Street to the N33.
To enable this phase, 122 memorial trees will be moved to a newly designated memorial woodland within the Railway Lands. The relocation is intended to support the long-term ecological health of the area while safeguarding the sentimental value of trees planted in memory of loved ones. Many trees’ current positions pose challenges such as shallow rooting, vulnerability to disease and unsuitable waterlogged soils.
The memorial woodland will be augmented with additional native species — including rowan, birch, alder, hazel and holly — to boost biodiversity and create a calm space for reflection. The remainder of the Railway Lands will continue to be preserved for active recreation and community use.
