Connolly Barracks Redevelopment Enters Tender Stage

Longford County Council has advanced the THRIVE Connolly Barracks Reimagined scheme to the tender phase, a key milestone in plans to regenerate one of Longford Town's most notable heritage locations.

The move was announced in a press release on Friday, 23 January 2026.

The €7 million project, co-funded by the Government of Ireland and the European Union through the ERDF Southern, Eastern & Midland Regional Programme 2021–2027, will transform the former military barracks into a multi-purpose cultural and community destination for the county.

Proposals include a new county museum, creative makerspace, podcast and recording studio, meeting rooms and music facilities. A rear extension will deliver a flexible conference and community events space.

Sustainability and accessibility are central to the design, with features such as solar panels and rainwater harvesting alongside improvements to ensure the site is welcoming and usable for all.

Cathaoirleach of Longford County Council Cllr Garry Murtagh said: "Moving to tender is a significant step towards delivering a space that celebrates Longford's heritage while embracing innovation and inclusion. This project will revitalise the northern quarter of our town and create opportunities for generations to come."

Deputy Chief Executive of Longford County Council John Brannigan said: "We are committed to ensuring transparency and engagement throughout this process. The tender stage signals real progress towards a cultural hub that reflects the values of the New European Bauhaus and Town Centre First."

Interested contractors can access the tender documentation via the national eTenders portal at www.etenders.gov.ie/.
