The Department for Infrastructure has commenced essential preliminary works for Phase 1 of the £60 million Portadown Flood Alleviation Scheme.
This initial stage involves service diversion works and the strategic clearance of trees and vegetation, timed specifically to conclude ahead of the upcoming bird nesting season.
Once complete, the extensive scheme will provide enhanced flood protection to more than 380 residential and commercial properties across 21 different sites in the Portadown area. The project is considered a critical intervention to combat the increasing risks posed by river flooding and climate change.
The Department has emphasised its commitment to environmental preservation throughout the design process. Following an arboricultural impact assessment and expert consultations, several design modifications were implemented to minimise the loss of existing trees.
Key environmental mitigation measures include:
- Reinstatement: Where shrubs or trees must be removed, the Department aims to replant similar species in the same locations.
- Compensatory Planting: If original sites are unsuitable for replanting, new trees will be situated in alternative areas, subject to landowner agreements.
- Ongoing Efforts: Approximately 1,200 trees have already been planted across Portadown to date.
Officials are continuing to engage with local stakeholders to identify further opportunities for compensatory planting as the project moves forward. The Department has pledged to provide regular updates as this major infrastructure scheme progresses.
