Work has begun this month on the Crodaun Wastewater Network Upgrade in Celbridge, a €8.5 million scheme under Uisce Éireann's national Growth and Development Programme.
The project will increase wastewater capacity, reduce the risk of sewer overflows and improve network performance, enabling the potential delivery of more than 900 new homes to support the town’' growth.
Welcoming the start of construction, Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage James Browne TD said: "The delivery of essential wastewater infrastructure is fundamental to meeting our housing targets as reflected in our new Housing Action Plan, ‘Delivering Homes, Building Communities’ and through record investment in the water sector. This project will provide critical capacity to enable new homes and serve the needs of the community."
Speaking for Uisce Éireann, Ciaran Ryan said: "This upgrade is a key enabler for sustainable development in Celbridge. By increasing capacity in the wastewater network now, we are supporting planned residential development, strengthening the performance of the existing system and ensuring reliable services for both current and future residents. We appreciate the cooperation of the community and will work to minimise disruption as the works progress."
The scheme will install more than 2 kilometres of new wastewater pipeline linking the existing Castletown Wastewater Pumping Station to Crodaun, running via Castletown Estate, Castletown Drive and the R405 Maynooth Road.
To facilitate construction safely, phased lane and road closures will be implemented. The first phase is on Castletown Drive, which is closed to public traffic from the Main Street junction to the R405 Maynooth Road junction until May under a rolling closure, allowing the work zone to move along the route. Diversions are clearly signposted, resident access on Castletown Drive will be maintained at all times, and the site team will liaise with householders as works approach individual properties. Diversions follow the R405, with northbound access via a right turn into Castletown Drive and southbound access via Main Street and a left turn into Castletown Drive.
Coffey Construction is delivering the project on behalf of Uisce Éireann, with completion expected in early 2027.
