Louth County Council is set to receive €4.5 million in funding from the National Transport Authority (NTA) to advance a major suite of Active Travel projects.

The investment is part of a broader €360 million national programme aimed at enhancing pedestrian and cycling infrastructure to promote safer and more sustainable transport options.

The 2026 allocation will fund 28 individual schemes throughout the county, with a strong emphasis on the "Safe Routes to School" programme. High-priority projects include an €825,000 investment for Bellurgan National School and €525,000 for St Mary’s National School in Knockbridge. Additionally, Callystown National School has been allocated €475,000, while Friary School will benefit from a €110,000 project that also links Ard Easmuinn Road to the local train station.

Major infrastructure improvements for Dundalk and Drogheda are also included in the programme. The R132 Inner Relief Road in Dundalk is slated for €800,000 worth of upgrades, while €550,000 has been designated for enhancements along the Rathmullan Road in Drogheda. Furthermore, a county-wide initiative to improve bus stops will receive €500,000 to better integrate public transport with active travel networks.

The funding was officially announced by Minister for Transport Darragh O’Brien TD, alongside Ministers of State Seán Canney TD and Jerry Buttimer TD. The investment aims to provide residents of all ages with healthier travel alternatives while reducing reliance on private vehicles for short local journeys.
