A major milestone has been reached in the regeneration of Limerick city centre following the award of a €70 million construction contract to John Sisk & Son.
The project involves the development of a 14-storey landmark office building at Opera Square, which is set to become the tallest structure in the Mid-West region.
Announced by Minister of State for the Office of Public Works (OPW), Kevin 'Boxer' Moran, and Mayor of Limerick, John Moran, the development will serve as a central hub for the public sector. Once complete, the 100,000 sq. ft. building will accommodate the Revenue Commissioners and other government departments, consolidating up to 1,500 civil servants into a high-quality, city-centre location.
The project is being delivered by Limerick Twenty Thirty (LTT) on behalf of the OPW, marking the first time this specific delivery model has been utilised. The building has been designed to Nearly Zero Energy Building (NZEB) standards, meaning its low energy requirements will be met entirely through renewable sources.
Minister Kevin 'Boxer' Moran said: "Today I am announcing the appointment of John Sisk and Son and look forward to the commencement of what is an important project for the OPW, Limerick and the wider Mid-West region.
"This new landmark building will play a key role in the modernisation of OPW's portfolio and its strategic goal to create more agile, digitally-enabled workspaces that will meet the current and future operational needs of our client Departments and achieve value for money."
Mayor of Limerick, John Moran, added: "Driving the Opera Square development has been one of those priorities that keeps me awake at night. Now, I feel, we have real momentum and I welcome today's announcement. It's a clear signal of continued Government support for Limerick and our future. An office right in the heart of the city for up to 1,500 public sector workers is a clear sign of the Government's commitment to Limerick's role in balanced regional development."
Construction is scheduled to take approximately 30 months, supporting up to 300 jobs during the building phase. The office block will overlook the Abbey River at Bank Place and is expected to act as a significant catalyst for further investment and activity within Limerick's urban core.
