A £600,000 carriageway resurfacing scheme on Hillhead Road in Castledawson is set to begin on Monday 2 February 2026, Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins has announced.
The scheme will cover a 3.5-kilometre stretch of road, extending from No.1 Harmony Hill to near the junction with the A54 Oldtown Road. The works aim to improve road conditions for residents, businesses and commuters in the area.
Announcing the project, Minister Kimmins said: "This is a substantial investment for the Castledawson area which will deliver significant benefits for residents and road users. The investment demonstrates my commitment to investing in and improving our road network, which is vital for connecting our businesses and communities. I would like to thank residents, local businesses and commuters for their patience while this essential infrastructure work is carried out."
To allow the works to be carried out safely, a road closure will be in place between the Lurganagoose Road in Knockloughrim and the Oldtown Road junction. The closure will operate between 7.30am and 5.30pm from Monday 2 February until Friday 13 March.
During these hours, signed diversion routes will be available via Lurganagoose Road, the A6 Glenshane Road, the A54 Magherafelt Road, Main Street and Moyola Road, and vice versa.
The Department has scheduled the works and traffic management arrangements to minimise disruption. While local access will be accommodated where possible, road users are advised to expect some delays, allow extra time for journeys in the area and comply with all temporary traffic restrictions.
Subject to favourable weather conditions, the scheme is expected to be substantially complete by Friday 13 March 2026. The Department has said it will keep the public informed of any changes to the programme.
