NI Water is marking Apprenticeship Week 2026, running from 2 to 6 February, by highlighting the vital contribution apprentices make to the economy and announcing a fresh wave of career opportunities.
For its September 2026 intake, the organisation is offering 27 entry-level roles across a diverse range of sectors.
The available positions include:
- Water Utilities and Construction Engineering
- Mechanical and Electrical Engineering
- Engineering Plant Operators
- Science and Hydraulic Modelling
- Internal Audit
Successful candidates will receive a full benefits package starting from day one, which includes a competitive salary, a structured path for career progression, and fully funded professional qualifications.
Helen Devlin, Head of HR Operations at NI Water, commented: "We very much champion our apprentices here at NI Water. They are energetic contributors, bringing new ideas and adaptability to address industry challenges. As a business, we also know that apprenticeships not only boost productivity and quality, but also foster staff retention, loyalty, and continuous improvement."
Among those currently progressing through the scheme is Ewan Leckey from Strabane, an M&E Craft Fitter Apprentice who joined after completing sixth form. Leckey noted that the hands-on nature of the role, which involves maintaining pumps, motors, and gearboxes across various sites in the North West, was a primary draw.
Ewan Leckey said: "I discovered this NI Water Apprenticeship through my cousin, who inspired me with his experiences, especially the chance to work with equipment like pumps, motors, and gearboxes. This hands-on learning and the opportunity to continually solve complex problems drew me in.
"A typical day could mean working with a mentor and going anywhere in the North West, working on clean water and wastewater sites, tackling tasks such as unblocking pumps or installing motors. The role offers constant learning, from multiskilling with electricians to completing various training courses like Water Hygiene and Forklift Training, all of which boost my confidence.
"My ambition is to master M&E Services, mentor others, and become known for innovative problem-solving. It is a great apprenticeship with great people that look after you. You are learning while you work and every day you learn something new. You go to college once a week which gives you more confidence within your work.
"I highly recommend applying for this year's apprenticeship scheme for its supportive environment and excellent training, both on the job and at college."
