Uisce Éireann has begun a multi-million-euro upgrade of the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) in Newmarket-On-Fergus, bringing fresh investment at the start of the year.
The scheme is intended to benefit local businesses, households and neighbouring communities, while also improving environmental quality and protecting conservation habitats. It will safeguard recreational waters used for fishing and boating and ensure compliance with Irish and EU regulations.
Uisce Eireann Programme Manager, Angus Hall, said: "We are excited to be getting work started in Newmarket-on-Fergus. We know how much communities like Newmarket-on-Fergus need these essential upgrades, to allow them to thrive. It is more important than ever for Uisce Eireann to help provide growth in these areas; while also improving the environment."
Works include upgrades to the existing WWTP, a new outfall location to the River Rine, construction of a new rising main, a below-ground pumping station, and a combined sewer overflow storage tank.
Traffic management will be in place along the R458, Ennis Road, to protect the public and work crews and to help deliver the project on schedule. Local and emergency access will be maintained at all times.
Glanua is delivering the project on behalf of Uisce Éireann, with completion scheduled for 2028.
