NI Water Highlights Crucial Role Of Wetlands For Infrastructure And Ecology

Every year on 2 February, World Wetlands Day is observed globally to raise awareness of these vital ecosystems. This year's theme, 'Wetlands and Traditional Knowledge: Celebrating Heritage', focuses on the historical and cultural significance of these landscapes.

NI Water is using the occasion to draw attention to the 80,000 hectares of wetland habitats across Northern Ireland, including key sites such as Bog Meadows, Moyola, Waterfoot, Glenarm, and Lagan Meadows.

These areas are not only biodiversity hotspots but also serve as essential natural infrastructure for the region.

Kerry Morris, NI Water Catchment Liaison Officer, explained the importance of the campaign: "This year's campaign highlights the deep connection between wetlands and human life throughout history, emphasising how these dynamic ecosystems support our wellbeing and heritage. Wetlands change daily and are vital to both past and present human life, making every effort to protect them which is crucial for future generations. Every wetland matters and every effort counts to ensure their protection for future generations."

From a construction and environmental management perspective, wetlands offer several functional benefits:

• Natural Filtration: They assist in cleaning raw water by removing pollutants through organic filtration processes before the water reaches treatment facilities.

• Climate Mitigation: Peatlands, in particular, are rich in sphagnum moss, which effectively absorbs $CO_2$ from the atmosphere. Properly managed peatlands are a key tool in reducing carbon emissions.

• Flood Management: These landscapes act as natural sponges, slowing downstream water flow and mitigating damage during significant storm events.

• Biodiversity and Wellbeing: They provide habitats for rare species and offer recreational spaces that support public health.

Highlighting the variety of these habitats, Kerry Morris added: "Wetlands are among the world's richest habitats, essential for biodiversity and supporting a variety of wildlife between land and water. In Northern Ireland, we are fortunate to have many wetland types – marshes, peatlands, swamps, lagoons, and saltwater marshes – each playing a vital role for nature and people alike. On World Wetlands Day, NI Water reaffirms its commitment to protecting these precious areas, which are crucial for clean water, climate resilience, and the wellbeing of our communities and future generations."
