Minister for Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht, Dara Calleary TD, has approved capital funding of €388,059 for Cumann Mícheál Breathnach in Indreabhán, Co Galway, to progress a series of site improvements.
The works will cover resurfacing of the car park, upgrades to footpaths, installation of public lighting and new floodlights for the playing field. Serving the area from Abhainn Bhoth Loisce west to Ros an Mhíl, the club has up to 700 members. The investment is expected to significantly enhance accessibility and safety for members and the wider community.
The grant has been sanctioned under the Department of Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht's Community and Language Supports Programme.
Announcing the allocation, Minister Calleary said: "As Minister for Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht, I am committed to supporting the Gaeltacht community to develop first-rate facilities and provide them to the community. There is an important link between sports and the Irish language in the Gaeltacht and sports clubs have a central role in the language planning process. This grant will greatly improve the club's environment, which will be of immense benefit to the membership of the club, to local residents and to the wider community."
He added: "This initiative is a good example of the kind of capital assistance available under the Community and Language Supports Programme for Gaeltacht groups and organisations. I am certain that local residents, young and old, will benefit from the facility being provided as a result of this funding.
"I commend the work that the committee has done as they seek to improve the club's facilities on behalf of the Gaeltacht community and this initiative will undoubtedly contribute greatly to work already done."
