Uisce Éireann has announced the successful completion of a €15.5 million upgrade to the Rathvilly Water Treatment Plant, securing a resilient water supply for more than 15,000 customers.
The project's completion has led the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to remove the Carlow North Regional Water Supply from its Remedial Action List (RAL) of vulnerable supplies.
The significant investment benefits residents and businesses across North Carlow, including Carlow Town, as well as neighbouring areas in Wicklow and Kildare. The upgrade was designed to ensure long-term compliance with drinking water regulations and to safeguard public health by providing a more secure and reliable service.
Hugh Kennedy, Programme Manager at Uisce Éireann, commented on the project's success: "We're proud of the team effort that led to the successful completion of upgrade works at the Water Treatment Plant in Rathvilly. We had the community in mind at every step of the project and ensured the water kept flowing throughout. With the completion of this project, we are ensuring the continued supply of safe, clean drinking water to the area, enabling local communities to thrive."
The works at Rathvilly focused on addressing risks to water quality and improving the overall efficiency of the treatment process. By modernising this critical infrastructure, Uisce Éireann aims to support the sustainable growth and development of the region.
Pat Duggan, Regional Drinking Water Compliance Manager at Uisce Éireann, added: "We are fully committed to identifying and addressing risks to drinking water quality. Our key focus remains the protection of public health through the provision of safe, clean, and secure water supplies for local communities. This critical upgrade ensures ongoing compliance with drinking water regulations and significantly reduces the risk of future water quality issues for the communities supplied by the North Carlow Regional Water Supply."
Uisce Éireann expressed its gratitude to the local community for their patience during the construction phase, noting that the removal from the EPA's list marks a major milestone for the region's utility infrastructure.
