Uisce Éireann has announced the start of construction on a new wastewater treatment plant in Castlemagner, County Cork. Representing a €13.4 million investment, the project is a major component of a national programme designed to facilitate housing delivery and promote sustainable development across Ireland's rural communities.

The new facility will replace outdated infrastructure dating back to the 1950s. By implementing modern technology, the plant will increase the village's treatment capacity from 50 to 500 population equivalent (PE), providing a robust foundation for local economic opportunities and new residential developments.

Modern Infrastructure and Environmental Safeguards

The project involves a comprehensive upgrade of the local network, including:

• Enhanced Treatment: Construction of a modern plant capable of handling ten times the current volume.

• Flood Resilience: An upgraded incoming sewer network and a new stormwater storage system to mitigate flood risks during heavy rain.

• Water Quality: A new outfall to the Lisduggan North Stream, ensuring that all discharged effluent is fully treated and compliant with environmental standards.

Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, James Welcoming the move, Browne T.D., said: "Investing in modern, resilient wastewater infrastructure is essential to support vibrant, thriving rural communities. The increased treatment capacity in Castlemagner will underpin future housing delivery in the area in the context in our new Housing Action Plan, Delivering Homes, Building Communities, and ensure the village can grow in a planned, sustainable way."

In a shift towards greener operations, the Castlemagner site will incorporate renewable energy and natural processing methods. These include ground-mounted solar panels to provide clean power and sustainable sludge-drying reed beds, which help lower energy consumption and reduce transport-related emissions.

The construction is being managed by Glanua Ireland Ltd. on behalf of Uisce Éireann. Works are scheduled to begin this month, February 2026, with the project expected to reach completion by early 2028.
