Breedon Group plc has announced the re-opening of the Aghamore quarry in County Sligo as a central component of its strategic expansion programme across Ireland.
The facility, which has now secured the necessary planning permission, significantly increases the Group's operational capacity to supply essential construction materials to infrastructure, residential, and commercial projects throughout the North-West.
The re-opening of the Sligo site marks a significant milestone, representing Breedon's 10th active quarry in the Republic of Ireland. This development underscores the Group's rapid and sustained growth since it first entered the Irish quarrying market in 2015 and established a formal presence in 2018.
The Aghamore facility is designed to support the region's growing demand for high-quality aggregates and downstream products. By expanding its geographic reach, Breedon aims to ensure long-term supply resilience and continuity for key regional projects.
Fraser Thom, Managing Director of Quarries and Concrete, highlighted the strategic importance of the site: "The reopening of our quarry in Aghamore is a key milestone in our ongoing investment strategy across Ireland. This facility aligns with our vertically-integrated model and strengthens our ability to service customers on the island of Ireland with high-quality, locally sourced materials."
"It also reinforces our continued commitment to supporting regional growth, sustainable operations, employment, and infrastructure development. This new facility further expands our capacity to supply high-quality aggregates, asphalt, concrete blocks, and ready-mix concrete to customers across the region, helping us to deliver on our strategic objective to build a fully integrated, nationwide platform for construction materials."
The development is a key step in Breedon's objective to establish a fully integrated, nationwide aggregates and construction materials platform across Ireland. This model allows the Group to manage the entire supply chain—from raw material extraction to the delivery of finished products—enabling greater efficiency and a more robust market position.
Since entering Ireland, Breedon has consistently executed an expansion strategy focused on operational excellence and regional development. The Aghamore quarry will play a vital role in this network, supplying a comprehensive range of materials including:
• Aggregates
• Asphalt
• Concrete blocks
• Ready-mix concrete
By utilising locally sourced materials, the quarry also supports Breedon's commitment to sustainable operations and the reduction of transport-related environmental impacts within the Irish construction sector.
