Lismore Watermain Upgrade Enters Final Commissioning

Uisce Éireann is advancing into the final commissioning phase of a significant watermain upgrade in Lismore, with nearly 3 kilometres of aging infrastructure being replaced to improve reliability and reduce leakage across the town.

To facilitate these commissioning activities, customers in parts of Lismore may experience low pressure or temporary supply interruptions on Friday, 20 February 2026, between 10am and 4pm. Supplies will begin to return gradually once works are completed and the network has time to recharge.

The scheme has already delivered the replacement of almost 2.5 kilometres of watermains, with the remaining section approaching completion. The upgrades, focused along Deerpark Road and Lismore Bridge, are designed to cut bursts and leakage, strengthening day-to-day resilience for homes and businesses and supporting future local development. Uisce Éireann has not disclosed contractor or contract value details for this package, but the works form part of the utility's ongoing national investment in water infrastructure.

Dave Murphy, Portfolio Manager at Uisce Éireann, said: "This project represents a major investment in Lismore's water network, with long-term benefits for the whole community. Replacing older, vulnerable watermains means fewer bursts, less leakage and a safer, more reliable water supply for homes and businesses. We would like to thank everyone in Lismore for their patience and support throughout these works as we move towards completing this final phase."

Uisce Éireann notes that managing leakage is inherently complex due to the scale of the network—over 65,000 kilometres of underground pipes nationwide—where many leaks are not visible. Nonetheless, measurable progress is being made, with national water loss reduced from 49% in 2014 to 36%.

The utility says continued upgrades to critical water services are aimed at enabling sustainable growth, ensuring safe drinking water, and enhancing environmental outcomes across Ireland. For real-time local updates on water outages and planned works, customers can sign up to Uisce Éireann's free text alert service by registering their Eircode and mobile number on the Water Service Updates page.
