A major construction project has officially commenced in Macroom, Co. Cork, following a sod-turning ceremony attended by the Minister for Justice, Home Affairs and Migration, Jim O'Callaghan, the Minister of State for the Office of Public Works (OPW), Kevin "Boxer" Moran, and Garda Commissioner Justin Kelly.

The new facility will serve as the Divisional Headquarters for the Cork County Garda Division. Designed as a state-of-the-art policing hub, the development is part of a broader government strategy to modernise infrastructure and expand resources for An Garda Síochána to enhance community safety and tackle crime.

The project features a main building spanning two, three, and four storeys, complemented by three standalone single-storey ancillary buildings and secure parking. In total, the development covers 4,338 square metres and will include modern office space, conference rooms, staff support areas, and advanced custody suites.

Minister Jim O'Callaghan said: "I am extremely pleased to be here today to join Minister Boxer Moran and Garda Commissioner Kelly to turn the sod on a much needed new Garda station in Macroom. The new station in Macroom represents a major investment in policing, community safety and public infrastructure for the Cork Garda Division. It is central to delivering the government's commitment to build stronger, safer communities by strengthening An Garda Síochána, expanding resources, and modernising facilities to tackle crime."

The Minister further noted that €364 million is being invested in a rolling programme of Garda building works as part of a wider €2.18 billion capital project fund for the Justice sector between 2026 and 2030.

The development is being managed through a collaboration between the OPW, the Department of Justice, and An Garda Síochána. Minister Kevin "Boxer" Moran added: "I am delighted to be here today to witness this significant milestone in delivering a New Garda Station for the people of Cork. The construction of this modern, state of the art facility is a vital development for policing in the south. I look forward to seeing its progress over the coming months and am confident that, upon completion, this new Garda Station will provide members of An Garda Síochána with a fit for purpose work environment ensuring they can continue to deliver their invaluable service to community of Cork and surrounding area."

Garda Commissioner Justin Kelly emphasised that the commencement of works is a vital step for both the force and the local residents. He stated: "The commencement of works on the new Macroom Garda Station is an important milestone for both An Garda Síochána and the local community. This development reflects a significant capital investment in policing infrastructure and will provide Garda personnel with modern, fit-for-purpose facilities to support the delivery of a responsive, community-focused policing service across Macroom and the wider County Cork area."
