RIAI Unveils New Competency Framework For Architecture

The Royal Institute of the Architects of Ireland (RIAI) has announced the publication of its new RIAI Competency Framework Architecture.

This initiative follows an extensive period of consultation and research, establishing the necessary standards for skill, knowledge, and competence at three vital career stages: education, training, and professional registration.

The role of the architect continues to evolve in response to global challenges such as urbanisation, climate change, and demographic shifts. Consequently, the profession is increasingly focused on evidence-informed decision-making, design-led thinking, and collaborative practices to support economic vitality and human wellbeing.

This new Framework is designed to underpin the RIAI’s accreditation processes and is integrated into every pathway leading to the Register of Architects. It supports the development, design, and professional accreditation of architectural examinations and qualifications throughout Ireland.

While building upon existing standards, the Framework is specifically structured to be future-focused and flexible. It connects the field of architecture to the broader professional, academic, and regulatory environment, aiming to evolve the profession while protecting its established legacy.

The Framework serves several key groups within the sector:

• Students of Architecture can utilise the document to guide learning, identify areas for personal reflection, and support their development during their studies.

• Architectural Graduates are provided with a structure for their professional practical experience and reflective practice as they move toward registration.

• Applicants to the Register using alternative routes can reference the Framework to understand the specific levels of competence and skill required for admission.

• Registered Architects are encouraged to use the competencies to inform their Continuing Professional Development (CPD), allowing for reflection on contemporary professional challenges and emerging skills.

• Architectural Educators can use the Framework to inform the design of curricula and learning experiences, ensuring education aligns with professional requirements while supporting various pedagogical methods.

• The Framework is also intended to support structured mentoring programmes for both graduates and students.
