Significant progress has been recorded at the Ballycastle Leisure Centre site as the project completes its first full year of construction. Since work began in February 2025, the development has moved through several critical phases, starting with site clearance and essential roadworks on Quay Road to establish a new filter lane and crossing point.
The past twelve months have seen the successful excavation and construction of the swimming pool tank. Another major structural landmark was reached in December 2025 with the completion of the building's steel frame, which has paved the way for the commencement of roofing as well as internal and external blockwork. Simultaneously, wider site improvements have progressed, including the installation of drainage systems and pitch perimeter walking paths.
During a recent visit to the site, the Mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens, Oliver McMullan, expressed his satisfaction with the development's pace: "I had the pleasure of visiting the site of the new Ballycastle Leisure Centre in December and was truly impressed by the progress being made. It's fantastic to see the works advancing so well – this facility will be hugely important to the people of Ballycastle and the surrounding area."
The construction team's performance has been highlighted by a perfect 45/45 score in its second Considerate Constructors Scheme audit. This exceptional rating reflects full marks across the categories of Workforce, Environment, and Community, underlining a commitment to industry best practices.
The Next Twelve Months
As the project enters its second year, the focus will shift from the primary structure to the internal spaces and building envelope. Key targets for the coming year include:
• Completion of the Leisure Centre shell
• Installation of internal building fabric and essential services
• Development of external amenities, including a new car park, a pump track, and an inclusive play park
Ballycastle Leisure Centre is a primary investment in the region's health and wellbeing infrastructure. The project is funded through Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council with a substantial financial contribution from the UK Government.
With the internal trades now mobilised and the structural frame finished, the project remains on schedule to provide a modern facility for the residents of Ballycastle and the surrounding areas.
