Construction is scheduled to begin in mid-March in Rathfriland as part of a £2 million Environmental Improvement Scheme.
The project, which covers Rathfriland, Gilford, and Markethill, is a collaborative initiative funded by the Department for Communities (DfC), DAERA, DfI, and Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council under the Small Settlements Regeneration Programme.
Following the initial phase in Rathfriland, the scheme is slated to move to Gilford in summer 2026, with works in Markethill expected to commence in autumn 2026. The project aims to enhance the aesthetic and functional quality of the towns while preserving their rural character. Planned improvements include:
• Upgraded pavement treatments and decorative features.
• Improved street lighting and new signage.
• Enhanced shared spaces and modern street furniture.
The works will be carried out by contractor Northstone in a phased manner to limit disruption. While temporary traffic management and lane closures will be necessary, access for emergency services, residents, and businesses will be maintained throughout.
Deputy Lord Mayor, Councillor Jessica Johnston, said: "This investment represents an important step in enhancing our rural towns. Beginning works in Rathfriland this spring marks the delivery phase of a scheme that will bring long-term benefits to local communities, businesses and visitors alike. We appreciate the patience and cooperation of residents as works progress and are committed to keeping people informed throughout each phase."
Community Engagement and Support Northstone has appointed Gareth McKenna as a dedicated liaison officer to assist residents and businesses during the construction period. A public drop-in session will be held on 11 March 2026 at the Rathfriland Regeneration Community Hub (4pm – 7pm) to provide further project details.
