NIE Networks has announced a major investment programme in the Castlewellan area to upgrade the local electricity infrastructure and ensure long-term supply security.
The project, which is scheduled to commence in early March 2026, will involve extensive essential maintenance to the high-voltage network and is expected to take approximately six months to complete.
A key component of this investment is the undergrounding of electricity cables along various roads and footways, a move designed to protect the network from environmental factors and improve the visual amenity of the area. Morrows Contracts has been appointed to carry out the excavation and civil engineering works on behalf of NIE Networks.
While access to residential and commercial properties will be maintained throughout the project, residents and commuters are advised that traffic management systems will be in place, which may result in temporary delays. The excavation sites will be secured using pedestrian barriers, and contractors will aim to backfill trenches as quickly as possible to limit the duration of any disruption.
NIE Networks stated: "We will be undertaking essential upgrade work in the Castlewellan area which will ensure customers continue to receive a safe and reliable electricity supply. The work will commence in early March and continue for approximately 6 months. This investment in the electricity network will include undergrounding electricity cables located along roads and footways. Morrows Contracts will be carrying out the excavation work on behalf of NIE Networks. This essential work will require traffic management in the area and may cause a level of disruption. We will do everything we can to keep this disruption to a minimum. Access to properties will be maintained but temporary disruption may be caused. During all works our excavation contractor will secure the site by way of pedestrian barriers and when possible, by backfilling the excavations."
