Uisce Éireann is moving into the next stage of its water network improvement scheme in Galway, with crews scheduled to begin work on St Mary's Avenue next week.
The project is part of the National Leakage Reduction Programme and follows the recent completion of pipe replacements on William Street West and Dominick Street Upper.
The upcoming works, which commence on Monday, 9 March, involve the replacement of approximately 300 metres of life-expired cast iron water mains with modern infrastructure. These upgrades are designed to reduce leakage, improve water quality, and ensure a more consistent and reliable supply for local residents and businesses.
To facilitate the safe delivery of the project, a road closure at St Mary's Avenue has been authorised by Galway City Council from 9 March until 17 April. While diversions will be in place, local and emergency access will be maintained throughout the duration of the works. Additionally, the road is scheduled to reopen temporarily for the Easter weekend to minimise disruption.
The project is being delivered by Farrans Construction on behalf of Uisce Éireann and is expected to be fully completed by late April.
Enda Mac Namara, Uisce Éireann Programme Manager, said: "This mains upgrade will improve water quality and provide a more reliable supply for residents of St Mary's Avenue and surrounding areas. The project will also help us work toward our aim of driving down leakage on the network and protecting our water supplies. With works on Dominick Street Upper now drawing to a close, we wish to thank residents and businesses in the area for their cooperation and understanding. We acknowledge that road closures can be disruptive, and we thank impacted road users for their support while these essential infrastructure upgrades were safely delivered."
