The Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, James Browne TD, has released the latest social housing delivery statistics, confirming that 2025 was a landmark year for construction.
A total of 9,089 new-build social homes were delivered throughout the year, representing a 16% increase (1,256 homes) over 2024 figures. This achievement stands as the highest level of social housing production recorded since the foundation of the state.
The record figures are attributed to the significant scaling up of local authority building programmes, alongside boosted output from Approved Housing Bodies and a general acceleration of construction work nationwide.
During his first year in the Department of Housing, Minister Browne introduced several key policy reforms designed to increase long-term yields. These measures include the creation of the Housing Activation Office, the introduction of a single-stage approval process, and the mandated use of standard house layouts as outlined in the Design Manual for Quality Housing. Additionally, the department mandated the adoption of Employers Requirements for Detailed Design of Quality Housing to streamline delivery.
Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage James Browne TD said: "We are now seeing an unprecedented level of delivery of new-build social homes, with 2025 representing the largest number of new build social homes constructed since the foundation of the State. This is serious momentum.
"This reflects the scaling up of local authority building programmes, increased output from Approved Housing Bodies and the acceleration of construction activity across the country.
"But these homes are not just units; they represent security, stability and opportunity for thousands of households.
"While this is a record year, we are driving on. The focus now is on sustaining and expanding this delivery, scaling further and ensuring that more people benefit from access to high-quality, secure homes.
"This is about the dignity of your own door. I will continue to be relentless in doing what needs to be done to make that happen for people."
The government intends to build on this momentum by focusing on sustained expansion to ensure continued access to secure, high-quality housing for households across the country.
