Douglas Wallace Consultants has delivered a significant redevelopment and extension of the Clayton Hotel Cardiff Lane, adding 115 new bedrooms to the prominent Dublin Docklands property.
Located on Sir John Rogerson's Quay near the Convention Centre Dublin, the project expands the hotel's capacity in the city's financial heart at a time of record-high demand for city-centre accommodation.
The architectural firm addressed the challenges of the constrained, landlocked site by reimagining the internal layout and utilising vertical extensions to maximise the available footprint. Beyond the additional guest rooms, the project involved the complete renovation of public areas, including the transformation of the riverside ground floor into a modern conference and events facility.
A key feature of the redevelopment is a new mezzanine level, designed as a double-height social and professional hub with contemporary interiors and extensive glazing to bring natural light into the building. The main entrance and reception were also entirely replanned to create a more spacious lobby capable of handling increased occupancy.
The works were part of a €7.5 million investment in business and front-of-house facilities, contributing to a broader €24 million capital programme invested in the hotel over the past seven years.
Joe Gallagher, Director at Douglas Wallace Consultants, said: "This project demonstrates how intelligent architectural thinking can unlock real commercial and operational value, even on one of the most constrained sites in the city. Delivering 115 new bedrooms in Dublin Docklands — where space is tight and demand is exceptionally high — is a significant achievement.
"Our approach focused on reworking the building from within, identifying opportunities to build upwards, repurpose underused areas and create a more efficient, contemporary hotel environment. At the same time, we introduced new meeting and social spaces designed around how people work and travel today.
"The result is a hotel that feels more open, modern and better connected to its location in the centre of Dublin's business district — a place that works equally well for corporate guests, conferences, short stays and city breaks."
The completed development strengthens the hotel's position as a primary corporate hospitality destination while modernising the guest experience for leisure visitors. Douglas Wallace Consultants, an Irish practice with over 40 years of experience, oversaw the entire project, from the bedroom extensions to the redesign of back-of-house and utility spaces.
