Waterford City and County Council is celebrating National Tree Week 2026, which runs from 8 to 15 March, under the theme "Growing a Greener Future Together".
The theme highlights how partnerships and community action can help build a healthier, more sustainable Ireland.
The initiative is underpinned by the long-standing collaboration between the Tree Council of Ireland and Coillte, which supports nationwide tree planting, biodiversity projects and environmental awareness.
Through this support, Waterford City and County Council has made 600 saplings available to local schools. The week was launched locally when a mountain ash (rowan) was presented to St. Angela’s Ursuline Secondary School by the Mayor of Waterford City and County, Cllr Seamus Ryan, with a further 600 saplings being delivered to schools across the county this week.
Mayor of Waterford City and County, Cllr. Seamus Ryan said: "We are delighted to support National Tree Week, as it creates an awareness about the crucial contribution of trees. By planting native saplings like these, we are taking a practical step toward combating climate change and restoring the biodiversity that is so vital to our island."
