Limerick City and County Council has formally welcomed the announcement that the Health Service Executive (HSE) is set to acquire a 44-acre site in Raheen.
The land acquisition is intended to facilitate the expansion of hospital services for both Limerick and the broader Mid-West region.
This development is viewed as a vital step in tackling long-term capacity issues within the regional healthcare system. The site will provide the necessary space for new infrastructure to support the requirements of a growing local population. The Council has reaffirmed its intention to collaborate with the HSE, the Department of Health, and other stakeholders to assist in the planning and execution of the project.
During a visit to Limerick today, the Minister for Health, Jennifer Carroll MacNeill, confirmed that the Government has approved the acquisition.
The Minister stated that the move will "provide a significant opportunity to provide meaningful additional capacity and health services to the people of Limerick, Clare and Tipperary."
The Príomh Chomhairleoir of Limerick City and County Council, Cllr Catherine Slattery, also commented on the news: "This is a very welcome and important development for Limerick and the entire Mid-West region. Expanding healthcare capacity has been a priority for our communities for many years. The acquisition of this site in Raheen marks a significant milestone towards delivering the additional hospital infrastructure our region urgently needs."
Dr Pat Daly, Director General of Limerick City and County Council, noted that the announcement represents a major strategic investment for the future of the area. He added:
"This announcement represents a major strategic investment in the future of healthcare in Limerick and the Mid-West. The Council is committed to supporting the HSE as they move forward with planning and development for this site.
